USA Swimming Nationals Speedo Recap: Day Two

2010 USA Swimming nationals - Day Two

Superstar Michael Phelps took to the pool for the first time at the 2010 ConocoPhillips U.S. National Championships in Irvine and swam his way into the history books yet again, winning national titles in both the 200m free and 200m fly to become the most decorated U.S. national swimmer of all time with 49 career titles.

With his 1:45.61 win in the 200m free, Phelps, who out-touched fellow Speedo star Ryan Lochte at the wall, tied the legendary Tracy Caulkins with 48 career national titles and won his 11th national title in this event. Later in the night, he returned to the pool to complete an impressive double and dominated the men’s 200m fly, touching first in 1:56.00, to earn his 49th career national title – the most all time. It was Phelps’ 7th national title in the 200m fly. Throughout his career, Phelps has won national titles in nine of the 13 individual events.

Phelps wore the Speedo LZR Racer Elite in both history-making races tonight.

Team Speedo continued to dominate at Nationals, led by Team Speedo star and 11-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin raced to victory in the women’s 100m backstroke, her signature event. In the first event of the night at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, Coughlin held off a young field to finish first in 1:00.14, her fifth national title in this event.

Speedo star Dana Vollmer secured a spot on the 2010 Pan Pacific Championship team with her second place finish in the women’s 200m free with a time of 1:56.93; Vollmer led the entire race until American Record-holder Allison Schmitt, wearing the Speedo LZR Racer Elite, surged ahead in the final 25 to clock the second fastest time in the world this year with a 1:56.84. Katie Hoff touched third with a season-best 1:57.50 to secure a spot on the women’s 800m free relay at Pan Pacs.
