Phelps and Lochte to Lead Team USA

Team Speedo stars Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte were the standout performers at the World Championships Trials last week, and will be the ones to watch at the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome later this month. Fellow Team Speedo swimmers Dara Torres, Peter Vanderkaay and Garrett Weber-Gale will also represent the U.S. in Rome.
In his first national competition since Beijing, Phelps won 3 events, including a world record in the 100m butterfly, taking down a mark held by Ian Crocker since 2005. Michael, competing in the Speedo LZR Racer, also cruised to victory in the 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly. He now owns a staggering eight of 16 possible men’s World Records in the sport.
Lochte won the men’s high point award from USA Swimming for his incredibly versatile performance in Indianapolis. With first place finishes in the 200m IM and 400m IM and a second place finish in the 200m backstroke, Ryan will represent the U.S. in all three events in Rome and is a top medal contender in each. Wearing the Speedo LZR Racer for all of his events in Indianapolis, Lochte gave Phelps’ 200m IM World Record a scare posting a time of 1:54.56 – a new meet record.
Look for Michael and Ryan to play a big role on U.S. relays in Rome as well.
Among the other swimmers to compete in the Speedo LZR Racer were Cullen Jones (American Record in the 50m freestyle), Dana Vollmer, and young phenom Dagny Knudson.
The 13th FINA World Championships will be held July 26 – August 2. Continuing its unprecedented swimming coverage, NBC and Universal Sports will be televising the event here in the U.S. Check your local listings for a full TV schedule.
